"Punkin Pin"
Supplies:
Begin by making a template of the pattern pieces. This can be done in several
different ways. Glue onto card stock, x-ray film, manila folders, freezer paper
and more. Use whatever you are comfortable using. Using an Air Erasable marker, trace pattern on to fabric. Note: The trace lines on the face front is also the sewing line. Sew face front using a 1/8" seam allowance. Cut out using a 1/8" seam allowance. Cut on the line for the rest of the face. After tracing the sides and the back of the head, use the trace line as the cutting line. With right sides together match up one of the face sides to the face front, pin and sew using a 1/8" seam allowance, repeat for other side. Ease the back in to the front part of the face, pin and sew leaving open as indicated at the top. Turn to right side and stuff, using small amounts of stuffing at a time. Be sure to get stuffing into the chin and nose area. Stuff the head firm, but NOT rock hard. Close opening using a ladder stitch. To define the nose a little, place one stitch into the bridge of the nose. With a straight pin mark where the eyes will be. Attach a black bead, for each eye. Tie off at the top of the head. To make eyelids, use a tiny scrap of fabric left over from your "Punkin" head. Place a bead of glue down the center of the wrong side of the fabric. Let the glue set up for a minute, then fold in half. Be sure the glue is in the fold. Gently pat down. Cut a small "C" shape, just big enough to fit over the bead. Place over the bead for size. Trim if needed. Using the lid you just cut as a template, trace and cut another for the other eye. (See diagram below)
The folded edge goes outward and the cut edge goes against the skin. Apply a small amount of glue to the underside and cut edge. Place the lid right on the bead. Then using a straight pin bring down each side of the lid. Hold in place or pin until dry. Repeat for other side. Using a black fabric mark, draw a mouth and some eyebrows. Finishing touches are the hair and the stem. Use some scrap fabric and cut four small strips and with the edge of your scissors, curl like you would ribbon. For the stem, use a piece of fabric or a scrap piece of leather. Lastly, SEW a pin back to the back of the pin. Enjoy!! |
